With 21 world records, a trip to the 1988 Seoul Games resulting in a bronze medal and a personal-record bench press of 410 pounds (two and a half times his body weight), Craig Blanchette is truly a world-class athlete. A double amputee with a passion for competition and incredible talent for sport, Craig added handcycling competitions (comparable to bicycling) to his wheelchair racing (comparable to running) career in 2000 - and became the U.S. Champion in handcycling in 2000 and 2001.
Craig credits Shaklee Physique® Workout Maximizer Supplement for helping him achieve his successful racing career. "It's practically impossible to be sore with this product - I've never seen another like it," says Craig. "Physique allows me to have better-quality workouts, to get better performance out of the same amount of work and to recover more quickly." He says he especially noticed the difference if he ever ran out of product during hard training. "I thought I was a slacker because my muscles weren't aching enough - but when I ran out of Physique it took my muscles two weeks to recover!"
In addition to Physique, Craig uses Shaklee vitamins, NutriFeron™, Carbo-Crunch® Snack Bars, Performance® Maximum Endurance Sports Drink and the Slim Plan Gold™ Weight Management Program. He notes realizing the dramatic difference of Performance® Sports Drink years ago at a race in Atlanta in July's sweltering heat. "Although I was drinking lots of liquid, I didn't have to run to the bathroom - as usual - after the race," says Craig. "Performance stays in my system and keeps me going better than water."
A Shaklee Distributor since 1996, Craig trusts Shaklee products and appreciates the Company's commitment to extensive research and testing. He gives his children Shaklee supplements and started his second son on Shaklee at a young age - by adding Vita-Lea® Infant Mix to his rice cereal. The family also uses Shaklee personal and homecare products, including Meadow Blend® Hand & Body Wash, and Basic-H®, and he has tips for avid campers and do-it-yourselfers: Basic-H washes pots and pans at the campsite.
At 37, Craig has finally begun to compete in fewer races but continues to influence and teach younger athletes. At the Dam2Dam Thumbs Up Bike Tour in Washington state, he runs a cycling clinic for those who want to learn about handcycling, racing strategies and nutrition. Sponsored by the Mike Utley Foundation, proceeds from the Dam2Dam go towards research for spinal cord injuries - which affect approximately two million people worldwide.
In addition to professional racing, Craig loves other sports like skateboarding, rock climbing and scuba diving and credits Shaklee products for allowing him to keep playing hard. "Shaklee products are great for everyone, even Physique, which will help someone who is just starting a new workout regimen recover faster and work out harder," says Craig. "If I'm going to work my butt off and train, I'm not willing to take a chance taking something that's not the best, because I never settle for second-best in a race."

"I'm probably the oldest athlete in an endurance speed sport." At 52 and a Masters athlete in cycling who is still going strong and winning championships, Kent Bostick is a prime example of someone not letting age slow him down. In fact, he accomplished his life-long dream of making the team at 42 in 1996, double the average age of most of his teammates. "This year I won the Tennessee Time Trial Championship in the 40 kilometer individual time trial," says Kent. "My times in this event are the same as 10 years ago. I've been able to maintain the same level of sport from age 20 to age 52, which is pretty unusual."
Kent, who didn't begin training seriously as a cyclist until the relatively late age of 26, is a two-time Pan-Am Games gold medalist and a 12-time senior national champion with two world records and more than 300 career victories. From 1989 to 2001 he rode with the Shaklee-sponsored cycling team. In this time, Team Shaklee set more than 10 world records, sent four riders to the 1992 Games in Barcelona, six to the 1996 Atlanta Games, and six to the 2000 Games in Sydney.
Kent is a big believer in Shaklee natural ingredients and uses practically every product on the Shaklee roster, including nutritional supplements, weight management products, personal care, and home care products. Kent attributes Shaklee supplements and weight management products for helping him make the team. "Shaklee products helped me lose additional pounds, which allowed me to climb better and be more competitive in timed events. I became more aerobic, I recovered faster and I improved my overall ability as an athlete." Today, Energizing Soy Protein helps Kent maintain his muscle mass so that he can burn the fat and stay competitive.
At 52 and a first-time dad, Kent has even less time to train and sleep, so supplementation and healthy habits are even more important to him. He says he doesn't have the most optimal training program because today he balances a full-time job and his new family life, but he still manages to ride 25 miles to work and 25 miles home each day, as well as ride up to eight hours over the weekend. Shaklee products accompany him on long rides and at competitions: He uses Performance® Maximum Endurance Sports Drink and Carbo-Crunch® Energizing Snack Bars while riding and then drinks Physique® to help him recover after a workout. "It helps me recover so fast, I can go home and mow the lawn afterwards," says Kent, smiling. "Physique® allows me to have a life after sports - or to race in multiple events in one day."
Although today racing for Kent is primarily about having fun and staying healthy, he remains competitive and wants to set the Masters 50+ record for 2 km pursuit on the track and 40 km on the road, as well as defend his national titles at the Masters National Championships in 2006. "I like the synergy between psychology, physiology, diet, and nutrition that is required for high-level cycling. I am fortunate to understand the benefit of Shaklee nutritional supplements and to use them to my advantage in sport and life."

For Laura Diaz, playing golf has always been a family affair. She cherishes the support she gets from her husband, dad, and brother, all golfing professionals. One of the top American players on the 2005 LPGA tour, Laura finished in the top 10 at three major tournaments. She is also a three-time member of the ultra-competitive and prestigious Solheim Cup Team, which plays the top European-born players from the Ladies European Tour. In 2004, this tough competitor recovered from off-season ankle surgery to accomplish seven Top 10 finishes. "It's a game that I love and I enjoy the intensity of the competition with all the great players I play against week in and week out," says Laura.
On the links by age nine, Laura has a long history of being the best. Her ascent to professional status began in college, where she was the 1995 ACC champion, a First-Team All-American from 1996-1997, and 1997 Female Athlete of the Year. In 1998, Laura was named Rookie of the Year on the Women Professional Golfers' European Tour (WPGET) and qualified for the LPGA Tour.
An athletic trainer introduced Laura to Shaklee in 2002. "What greatly interested me were the natural ingredients in the Shaklee products," says Laura. "The combination of the Energizing Soy Protein and Physique® Workout Maximizer supplements helped both my husband and me see a big change in our bodies. I definitely felt better about my body in general and getting stronger helped to improve my golf." Laura also uses Physique® while on the course as a nutritional snack to keep her revved up through 18 holes. She not only likes the taste-she appreciates that Physique helps her muscles recover after an intense workout.
Competing from March through November, Laura spends 26 weeks each year traveling to tournaments throughout the country. In addition to competing, she maintains a strict workout regimen including weight-lifting and cardiovascular training. During the off-season, she also plays golf six times per week. Her schedule will be even tighter next season, as Laura is expecting her first baby in January 2006. "It's going to be quite challenging to fit it all in!" says Laura.
Shaklee products, integral to her training, now play a part in her new lifestyle as a mom-to-be. "It's been great using Shaklee products during my pregnancy," says Laura. "If I'm lacking protein, I can grab a protein shake and know that what's going into my body is all natural."
In 2006 Laura is determined to defend her position as one of the top American players on the LPGA Tour, wants to get back into the Winners' Circle, and would be very excited to qualify to play on her fourth Solheim Cup Team in September 2007, in Sweden.

Gold-medal wins at the 1996 Atlanta Games and the 1999 World Cup changed women's soccer. The victorious U.S. Women's National Team inspired many young girls to pursue their athletic dreams and kicked women's soccer into the big leagues.
Carla Overbeck, a defender and captain of the U.S. Women's National Team for six years, was one of only two players to play every minute of these two momentous games. What's more, she scored the opening penalty kick against China in the 1999 World Cup Final, helping her team take home the first-ever gold medal in the history of U.S. women's soccer. She played so many games in her career that she earned the nickname "the ironwoman of soccer." Case in point: In 1996 she played 63 consecutive international games, a record for any U.S. national team player, man or woman. The year before, Carla was a finalist for the Women's Sport Foundation Athlete of the Year, among other top athletes such as Bonnie Blair, Steffi Graff, Picabo Street and Rebecca Lobo.
Carla kicks soccor ball"I am extremely competitive; I loved the competitive aspect of playing soccer," says Carla. "It's about putting yourself on the line, whether you win or lose. That's the kind of person I am and I'll spend my lifetime getting out there and being active." Today, Carla is a mom of two and a part-time coach at Duke University, a job that keeps her involved with the sport but also allows her to spend time with her children, who are very energetic - and not just with soccer! Her son loves baseball, basketball, and is starting to try lacrosse. "I don't care if he plays soccer," says Carla. "I just want him to enjoy getting exercise."
Carla has used Shaklee products from day one, because her mother was a Shaklee customer. "I knew they were the best vitamins out there, and I also would use Shaklee Physique® and Meal Shakes when I was training," says Carla. "I felt good - strong, healthy and confident - and didn't want to change my routine during the most important time of my career." While traveling and training with the U.S. National Team from 1998 to 2000, Carla often supplied her teammates with Shaklee supplements if they were feeling run down.
Today Carla uses Shaklee Joint Health Complex* to help keep her knees limber because soccer is hard on the knees. In addition, "now that I'm getting older and used to be in the sun all the time," she appreciates the Shaklee skin care and makeup product lines. And, continuing the trend set by her mother, Carla's husband and kids also take Shaklee supplements.
In the future? "The possibility of being a head coach is out there," says Carla. For now though, she is concentrating on coaching her two star players and ensuring they grow up healthy and active.

"I'm not very coordinated at all," says Carly Piper, 22 years old, and a gold medalist in the 800 meter freestyle relay at the 2004 Games in Athens. On land, that is, prompting her friends and family to call her a "fish out of water" when she's on the basketball court.
The pool, though, is another story. In 2005, she won her first national title in the 400 meter freestyle and placed seventh in the 200 meter and 800 meter freestyle competitions at the World Championship Trials. In 2003, she won gold in the 800 meter freestyle relay at the Pan American Games. And the gold medal in Athens in 2004 happened to be a 17-year-old-world-record-breaking win. In addition to her gold medal, Carly is very proud of her University of Wisconsin team that placed in the Top 10 at the NCAA Championships, a first in the history of the team.
"Being in Athens was one of the best experiences I've ever had, it really made me grow," says Carly. "It was a little intimidating, but I figured that if I made it that far, there was a reason...and I calmed down and just did it." Having her teammates there helped too: the 800 meter relay team consists of four athletes, who each swim 200 meters. "I love the competition and trying to get your hand to the wall first," she says.
Carly's parents were Shaklee Distributors when she was young, so she has used Shaklee nutritional products for years. Today she takes Vita-Lea®, Sustained Release Vita-C® and Super Cal Mag Plus. "It is important for me to take vitamins daily so that my body stays healthy and I can continue to train at the rate that I do," says Carly. "If helping my body stay well is as easy as taking vitamins, that's what I'll continue to do!" Carly credits Shaklee vitamins for helping her to achieve a level of health that puts her at the top of the large Wisconsin swim team. During training and competition, Carly uses Performance® Maximum Endurance Sports Drink and Carbo-Crunch® Snack Bars to help her muscles recover and replace depleted nutrients. And, to keep her face hydrated after long hours in a chlorinated pool, Carly depends on products from the Enfuselle® skin care line.
She fits training in around class work, swimming four hours a day, four days a week, plus weightlifting two days a week. In addition to competing, Carly is working on a Zoology degree and hopes to one day work with animals, possibly as a veterinary technician.
Carly definitely has her eye on the 2008 Games in Beijing. In the short term, she will be competing in the Short Course World Championships in China in April and the U.S. National Team Trials in August - and she will surely bring her Shaklee supplements along.

- Placed second in the 400m free at the 2005 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool
- Placed tenth in the 400m free at World Championships

Shannon Porges competes in marathons and triathlons for the love of sport. In 2005 she was nominated an All-American, raced in the National Triathlon competition, and went on to compete in the World Championships, against athletes from 20 other countries. A long-time Shaklee customer and a Shaklee Distributor since 1996, Shannon also helps other women accomplish athletic goals they never dreamed of through her work as a fitness instructor and as head coach for Team Danskin® triathlon training in the Boston area.
Shannon, an avid swimmer and skier as a teenager, first started competing in triathlons in 1992 when she was 28 years old, debuting at the Danskin® Women's Triathlon in San Diego, California. She continued competing for a few years, and then her life took a detour with marriage and a family. Now that her two children are of school-age, Shannon has started competing once again and with great success - much to her surprise, she says modestly. Last year she placed second in the Danskin triathlon in New Jersey, and this year she finished second in the grueling Boston Triathlon. Talent combined with hard work pays off, and Shannon works hard, maintaining a tough year-round workout and competitive schedule.
In addition, Shannon adheres to a healthy diet packed with vegetables, and recommends to her athletes to always, at the least, take a multivitamin. Today, Shannon uses many Shaklee nutritional products.
In 1996 Shannon began a regimen that she continues today. It includes taking Vita-Lea®, Shaklee Super Cal Mag Plus, Vita-E Complex®, Sustained Release Vita-C®, CarotoMax®, Essential Omega-3 Complex, B-Complex, Garlic Complex, and Energizing Soy Protein. It is important to her that Shaklee products are all natural with no fillers or binders - and are safe enough to give to her children, who have been taking Shaklee vitamins since they were each six months old.
Shannon is eager to test her limits and has her sights set on racing in the Ironman. An ultimate triathlon competition, it consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.6-mile run. First, though, she'll run the Boston Marathon in April 2006 and enter a half-Ironman race, as part of the Ironman's qualifying requirements. Shannon won't stop there. She'll continue to coach women of all shapes, sizes, and athletic abilities to compete in their first triathlon - a coaching job that inspires her to push herself.
Achievements:
- Nominated an Olympic Committee All-American
- Competed in the 2005 Triathlon World Championships (Women)
- Placed second in the New Jersey Danskin Triathlon in 2004 in the Elite category
- Placed second (among women) in the 2005 Boston Triathlon in the Elites in Sprint Race category; ninth overall

When Darin Shapiro, "the most winning rider in history," began to compete in 1991 at age 17, just one professional wakeboarding tour existed. Today this relatively new water sport is rapidly growing in popularity and there are professional wakeboard tours and competitions all over the world, including the "Shapiro Wake Cup" in Russia - proof positive of Darin's significant impact on the sport. Major U.S. events include the Masters Water Ski & Wakeboard Tournament, the World Championships, the Pro Wakeboard Tour and the X Games. Darin has won every one of these tournaments multiple times during his remarkable career.
"I'm proud that I was able to stay on top for so long in a sport that has been constantly changing - with new styles, tricks and equipment," says Darin. "In the beginning I was one of the only guys really into the sport; it was the perfect crossover that blended my abilities on a trick water ski as well as a surfboard."
Darin has depended on Shaklee for nearly seven years and credits the company's products for helping him to sustain such a long, successful career. "I think I've ridden longer and better because of Shaklee products," says Darin. "When you are heavily into sports, you can't over look the importance of maintaining good nutrition; it has definitely improved my overall health and performance."
In addition to taking Shaklee Vita-Lea®, Alfalfa Complex, Lecithin, CoQHeart® and Vita-C® to supplement his nutrition, Darin relies on Physique® Workout Maximizer Supplement to help him recover faster after a hard workout. "It's like dessert - nice and cold," he says. During competitive events and while traveling for business, Darin's backpack is always full of Shaklee products, including Carbo-Crunch® Energizing Snack Bars and Multi-Munch™ Protein Boost Nutrition Energy Bars. "Shaklee bars are awesome between meals or for when I travel - there's always the worst food available on the road - and Shaklee Cinch™ products are great for keeping my metabolism and energy up." Shaklee NutriFeron™ has also made a difference in Darin's health: he recently began taking the supplement and is happy to report he has continued to feel great despite his heavy travel and workout schedule.
After 15 years as wakeboarding's top competitor, Darin will continue to promote the sport and help guide its development as a dedicated coach and advocate. Darin says he'd like to see wakeboarding become popular with a whole new generation. "Wakeboarding is doing to waterskiing what snowboarding has done for skiing," comments Darin. "It has attracted a lot of new fans to the sport - today you rarely see a ski boat pulling anything but a wakeboard." A trend he can certainly be proud of.

At 22 years of age, with top four finishes in every professional women's slalom waterskiing tournament in the 2006 season and a new personal best performance record, Michelle Simpson will be the one to beat in 2007.
"In 2005, I won the World Cup tour title for women's slalom," says Michelle. "The competition is kind of addictive. When you do well, it's the best feeling in the world - to accomplish something you never thought you could."
Michelle's waterskiing career began at age 4 with spins on a lake near her home in Bridgeport, Texas. It was when she went to ski school and learned slalom that her passion for the sport really became apparent.
Michelle skied for her alma mater, Rollins College in Florida for two years and won a collegiate team championship and an individual slalom title in 2003. That same year, Michelle also won a bronze at the Water Ski World Championships and a silver at the 21 and Under Water Ski World Championships. Today, Michelle competes exclusively in the professional circuit.
Michelle began using Shaklee products in 2006 at the recommendation of her trainer and says that the results have been fantastic. "For a long time, I wasn't consistent in taking supplements because I didn't know what to take - I didn't want to put anything synthetic into my body," says Michelle. "Shaklee's natural ingredients provide great nutrition I know is safe and right for me."
Michelle depends on Essential Foundation Shaklee Basics vitamins, VitalMag, OsteoMatrix, Omega Guard™ and NutriFeron™ to help keep her in good shape on the road. "I've noticed how healthy I've been this year, not as worn-down from traveling," says Michelle. "That has helped my skiing because although I still ski and train if I'm worn down, my body takes longer to recover. It's better to stay healthy in the first place!"
Performance® Maximum Endurance Sports Drink has been key to Michelle's strength this season. "I traveled with Performance this whole year and definitely feel like I have more energy," says Michelle. "Sitting and warming up in the heat for hours, waiting for your event, really can take a toll as far as dehydration. Shaklee Performance keeps me hydrated and gives me the electrolytes I need."
Michelle also takes Shaklee Physique® Workout Maximizer Supplement to help her body recover faster - particularly in the off-season when she's lifting and skiing hard, as well as working to improve her flexibility with yoga and Pilates. Michelle recommends, "Try Physique blended with frozen raspberries and soy milk!" Another healthy treat she loves are the new Shaklee Cinch ™ products, especially the Chocolate Decadence Bars and Shakes which she says are great-tasting and easy to eat on the run and while traveling.
Michelle plans to ski professionally for at least another 10 years - through college graduation and three years of law school. "I think Shaklee will help me to excel in my sport and maintain my overall health for the long-term. Being strong and healthy is essential for my athletic career and Shaklee will help me accomplish my goals."

The U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding Team, comprised of 14 different men's and women's national teams in Alpine, Cross Country, Disabled, Freestyle, Jumping/Nordic Combined, and Snowboarding categories, has been training and competing hard to reach its goal of winning the most medals of any nation in skiing and snowboarding at the 2006 Games in Torino, Italy.
Keeping these athletes healthy is challenging, as they push through tough training schedules, high-stress competitions, and grueling overseas travel throughout the year. "With Shaklee NutriFeron™ as part of their health regimen, our athletes stay healthy and have more of the training days needed to win competitions," says Susie Simmons, United States Ski Association (USSA) Sports Dietitian and Physiologist.
Because they need to train in the summer, and because many competitions are held in European countries, U.S. athletes generally travel for four to five months without a break during the competitive season and for two months in the summer for training in the Southern Hemisphere. Unlike their U.S. competitors, many European athletes have the luxury of returning home after a weekend competition and can lead a partially normal life, sleep in their own beds, and eat their own food during the week. American athletes spend their week traveling to the next event, often in a different country and can feel worn down as a result. In addition, U.S. Ski Team athletes live and train in winter conditions for most of the year.
To help its athletes stay well, the U.S. Ski Team nutrition team provides education about how to stay healthy on the road and during competition. In addition to food concerns, Ski Team nutritionists supply athletes with nutritional kits and recommend taking Shaklee NutriFeron™ to boost their immune systems. Over the past two years since including NutriFeron in the recommended regimen, many U.S. Ski Team athletes have noticed a significant improvement in their immune response. Many U.S. Ski Team athletes will take NutriFeron with them wherever in the world they are traveling to train and compete, including to the 2006 Games in Torino, Italy, as part of optimizing their health and enabling them to perform in top condition.
Each category (alpine, snowboarding, cross-country, etc.) has its own schedule.

Ocean Alliance, a recognized global leader in whale research and conservation, was founded in 1970 as the first organization to study live, free-ranging whales and continues today to run the longest continuous research program on whales. The scientists of Ocean Alliance have pioneered many of the research methodologies that are now standard in the study of marine life worldwide.
Because studying whales also involves understanding the environment in which they live, Ocean Alliance has expanded its focus to include researching the effects of pollution on marine life. In 2005, Ocean Alliance completed the five-year voyage of the Odyssey, a ship sailed by researchers charged with the task of gathering the first-ever baseline data set of the distribution of concentrations and effects of synthetic contaminants in the world's oceans.
"The Odyssey's trip is done and the information we've gathered is quite compelling," says Iain Kerr, Ocean Alliance's chief executive officer and captain of the Odyssey. "I would love to think that the oceans were clean and we could move on, but our research shows there is much work to be done cleaning up pollutants - even in the remotest parts of the planet."
The threat of pollution to whales, other sea animals and ultimately to humans, is why Ocean Alliance applauds Shaklee's all-natural approach and appreciates donations of Shaklee products such as cleaning supplies, nutritional supplements and personal care items. "If you're going to change people or change the world, you need to make a commitment," says Iain. "Shaklee has supported Ocean Alliance for more than 10 years, and their safe, organic products have gone with us around the world." The Ocean Alliance team also appreciates the effectiveness of Shaklee products. In particular, vitamins were especially important for the crew when fresh fruit and vegetables were lacking on long legs of the voyage.
Once the data gathered from the Odyssey has been analyzed, Ocean Alliance's next steps are to return to particular areas and quantify pollution's effect on animals and also on humans - many of whom rely on seafood as a primary source of protein.
What's very interesting," says Iain, "is that we don't need any great technological fix to solve this problem. All we have to do is make small changes in our lifestyles. Our generation has a great opportunity in front of us, to remove these pollutants from our food chain."

The Wild Dolphin Project (WDP) is currently working on a two-way project in which researchers are developing techniques to bridge the communication gap between dolphins and humans. For 20 years, WDP has been studying a specific pod of Atlantic spotted dolphins - a species that had never been studied before - near the Bahamas in order to learn more about their lives and how they interact with other dolphins and marine life. Spending five months of the year on a research boat, the team has accumulated unprecedented amounts of baseline data in the form of photographs, video and audio tape that has fueled the publication of more than 20 scientific papers, articles in various magazines including National Geographic, and numerous television documentaries with the BBC and PBS.
"Most people don't realize that dolphins form long-term friendships and relationships," says Dr. Herzing, the founder of WDP. "They are very intelligent and they communicate with each other in complex ways."
Although swimming with dolphins in the Bahamas sounds glamorous, Dr. Herzing says it's actually a very challenging and physically grueling job. The sun and sea water is hard on the researchers' skin, so they greatly appreciate donations of Shaklee skin care products that help keep them going in the field. A WDP sponsor for 10 years, Shaklee supplies the research boat with environmentally friendly cleaning products like Basic-H®, Basic-G® and Basic-L®, nutritional supplements; and personal care products like Enfuselle® SPF 30 for Body sunscreen, Enfuselle® Hand & Body Lotion, ProSante® shampoo and conditioner and Desert Wind® Antiperspirant.
Using environmentally safe products is the only option for Dr. Herzing, and she appreciates the amount of research that goes into the development of Shaklee products. "We all impact the health of the ocean by our own behavior," she says. "We need to be conscious of this on a personal and a global level. Shaklee makes it easy for people to choose products that are good for the environment."

Athletes in serious training need dietary protein to replace muscle protein that is torn down during exercise, as well as carbohydrate muscle fuel to replace the carbohydrate stores that are burned during exercise. The role of protein in this process is of vital importance as, along with carbohydrates, it seems to work synergistically to increase insulin release from the pancreas. This helps raise insulin levels, which are low after exercise, to move blood glucose back into the muscles for glycogen production. This is the major source of muscle fuel. Additionally, insulin is a strong activator of amino acid transport and protein synthesis, both of which are essential to repairing tissue damage after exercise. Hence, high-quality protein with a balance of amino acids provides the building blocks for muscle restoration. Choose One of the links below for information.
Physique and Muscle Tone
The products which are designed for sports recovery, muscle firming, toning, and building, Physique and Fitness, have many other applications beyond sports. Since they were developed to increase muscle tone and strength they would also be good choices for the elderly who experience weakness in their muscles, young children, or just about anyone who has an issue with muscle tone. Of course, if the products are used as part of an after-exercise regimen for toning, building or just firming muscles, and to enhance speedy recovery, that's the best combination. Keep in mind, when shoveling snow, or doing any kind of exercise for the first time, these products DRAMATICALLY decrease any muscle soreness!
Tendonitis
Six weeks ago my husband, John, called me from work to ask for information on tendinitis to give a co-worker suffering from tendinitis of the Achilles tendon. It was very painful and he had been to several doctors, was taking anti-inflammatory drugs, pain killers, and had even received injections of cortisone. The very same day, Dave, a craftsman was working in our home replacing some windows. I noticed that he winced when lifting a heavy window and I asked him about it. He said that his brother-in-law had talked him into lifting weights and he had been suffering from tendinitis of the tendon on the outside of the elbow ever since. He had been taking mega doses of prescription Advil for months with very little relief. He asked, "Do you have any information on tendinitis?" "Well," I said, "As a matter of fact I do!" and I gave him the xerox that I had printed from the book "Smart Medicine for Healthier Living."
Tendonitis can occur anywhere a tendon joins muscle to bone. The inflammation is usually caused by overexertion in sports or other physical activity, and can be acute or become a chronic problem from long-term overuse. If you place too much stress on a tendon, it can become inflamed and swell, causing pain, soreness, tenderness, and impaired motion of the muscle attached to the affected tendon.
Dave looked over the information I gave him and quickly said, "I'll take anything you recommend. I'm desperate!" I encouraged him to use the RICE technique (rest, ice, compression & elevation), increase his intake of fruits and vegetables, avoid refined sugar and caffeine, and to decrease red meat and dairy consumption. He left with a box of Shaklee Basics (to supply the basic nutrients his body needs), Energizing Soy Protein (very important for healing), Vitamin C (Important in the production of collagen and helps speed repair of tissue), and EPA (oil from cold water fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids that help moderate the inflammatory response). Plus CarotoMax and Formula I to help reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair. I called Dave in two weeks. He reported that his pain was MUCH lessened, that he could carry light objects without any pain at all. He said that it was as if his body was craving the supplements.
RIGHT ON DAVE! THAT'S EXACTLY RIGHT! He doesn't need to take Advil anymore. I wish you all could have heard the excitement in his voice. What happened to John's co-worker with the Achilles' tendon pain? He looked over the information and thanked him but didn't think it would help. He's still suffering with pain and walks with a pronounced limp.
Is there a moral to this story? YES! If you have a health concern you have absolutely nothing to lose by trying Shaklee food supplements. All products come with a complete money back guarantee. Our bodies are very wise--and they communicate with us every day, giving us messages about what they need to function properly. If you have a health concern, you're not getting the nutrients that your body needs from the food you eat.
Shaklee's clinically tested food supplements provide the missing nutrients so you're getting all that you need for optimal health!
- Harriet Gushue, R.N.Torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament Healed With Shaklee!
They said it couldn't be done! But then, they didn't understand the power of God, Nature and Shaklee!
Since the time the horse I was riding last July 11th reared up and went over backwards on top of me, I have constantly astounded the doctors who have treated me. We're talking about 800 pounds crashing down on me from about 5-6 feet in the air! The EMT's thought surely I must have broken bones and internal injuries, and flew me to Shock-Trauma in Baltimore. Doctors found it hard to believe that I wasn't hurt worse than I was. However, I had been taking large numbers of Shaklee supplements for 5 1/2 years to help keep my MS (Multiple Sclerosis) under control, and I credit them with strengthening my bones and tissues, preventing more serious injuries. I also thank the Lord for protecting me in the fall, which could have been another story had we fallen differently.
The most serious injuries I had were a severely "crushed" thigh muscle and two torn ligaments in my left knee. I was pretty much bruised all over, plus I also had a broken nose from the horse thrashing around on top of me after the fall, and torn cartilage where a rib met the sternum - from being pulled out from under the horse.
I used Borage Oil to reduce pain and swelling, from about 5 minutes after the accident. Although doctors wanted to give me morphine for the pain, I resisted and was able to control the pain and swelling nicely with 2,000 mg. of Borage oil, taken every 2-3 hours around the clock.
I told my doctors I thought I could heal my knee injuries with supplements, but every doctor that saw me told me that while the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) would probably heal on it's own, the torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) would have to be surgically repaired. They showed me on the MRI film where the ACL was completely severed, and said it was not possible for it to mend itself. If I didn't have surgery, I would always have problems, they said. Still, I wanted to try to heal it with supplements, and they agreed to wait and let me see what could be done.
Through a priesthood blessing, I received counsel from the Lord which gave me direction as I began my recovery program. Keeping that in mind, I proceeded to put nature to work healing my wounds, via Shaklee's top-quality, natural food supplements.
The nose and torn rib cartilage were nearly healed in 10 days, and totally healed in three weeks with lots of Shaklee supplements. The crushed thigh muscle took longer, but healed nicely. My knee seemed to me to be healing really well as time went on, and I kept it protected with a brace for 2 1/2 months. As weeks went by, the progress in my knee continued to please my doctor, until on October 19th, after examination, he said that it had healed beyond the point that he would automatically recommend surgery. He said surgery would be optional at that point. I asked for another MRI to see what was going on inside the knee, to help me decide on whether or not to opt for the surgery, and he agreed that it would be a good idea.
I had the MRI done and returned to the doctor on October 30th for his review. He was amazed and very impressed when he saw the MRI report and viewed the films themselves! The ACL had grown back after all, and after a very "vigorous" examination, he found that my knee had no instability at all! He said he had never seen that happen, and didn't know how to explain it! He said I would not need surgery; my knee should be fine after it finished healing! He wants me to be cautious for the next couple of months as it continues to heal and strengthen the ligaments, so as not to disrupt the healing that has occurred thus far.
I asked him if he wanted some information on the supplements that I had used, and he said he would be very interested in it. I gave him a "Health Care Professional's Packet," to which I added "The Shaklee Difference" and a "Product Guide." He said he would read it and keep it on file for people who were interested in trying supplements.
By the way, as many of you may know, stress is a trigger for MS, yet with the additional Shaklee supplements, I was also able to keep my MS under control through all the stress of the accident and injuries.
The supplements I took (larger quantities, more often at first, then less often as healing progressed):
Some Physique at the beginning; Slim Plan w/ "Instant Protein Soy Mix; Vita Lea; Vita C S-R; Vita E Plus; Zinc; Alfalfa; Osteokinetics; Acuity Plus; Borage Oil - 2000 mg. every 2-3 hours for pain and inflammation; EPA; Lecithin; Carotomax; Garlic; Calcium-Magnesium.
I thank God and Shaklee for my "miraculous" recovery, and I thank God for sending "angels" into my life, to share Shaklee and their knowledge of alternative therapies with me. I also thank God for Shaklee - I truly believe that Dr. Shaklee was inspired as he developed the amazing products and company which have helped so many. They have helped me to overcome tremendous personal health challenges and have enabled me to help others, as well.
High School Sports
I am a high school track coach, specifically the distance runners. Last season I provided Shaklee Performance for my runners for the track meets. (I also brought along fruit and Carbo Crunch bars for snacking.) My runners did well in their track meets. Until the last meet, the District meet.
For that meet, the head coach brought Powerade (nasty stuff! -- first ingredient is SUGAR). Even though I told my runners not to drink it, they still did. And they ran TERRIBLY! Their worst times of the season. After that, they believed. This year I expect to have no arguments about Performance!
- AnneI also had a soccer team on the Performance and after a final game they took Physique -- they went to championships and won! -- all in one day. They said they couldn't have done it without the Physique. Good Luck!
- JennyHad a gathering here last evening and one of the Moms here told how her son ended up in the hospital after taking a supplement which he purchased in GNC which was supposed to enhance body building. She didn't know the exact name of the substance, but it started with an "A" (androstenedione?). What is the commitment of GNC to your health if it sells supplements that are not safe? Thank God her son was all right after all, but the whole family & his friends who were with him when his heart slowed down had quite a scare!
Just again to reiterate how important SAFETY is when you are dealing with supplements! Again, Dr. Doster, our Sr.V.P. Science stated "something is either SAFE or it is not SAFE," AND SAFETY IS SHAKLEE'S PRIMARY CONCERN! After 44 years, it is quite evident we not only have the longevity in the industry but the commitment to science, SAFETY, and efficacy!
- Gerri StinerMany years ago I had a mother call me whose son had used Physique in the past, but when she lost her job he felt he couldn't ask his mom to get it for him. So he turned to GNC also.....
Two days later he was feeling so awful, he told his mom what he had done. She immediately called their doctor. In reading over the can of GNC "stuff"... she noticed that it stated not to be used by persons under 18 yrs old. Her son had to use his driver's permit (he was 15 at that time) to get GNC to take his check!
When the doctor looked at the "stuff" he just said that it was a good thing that her son was not a diabetic or he might not have even lived to tell anyone he was feeling bad. So then the panicked mother asked about Physique. The doctor assured her that anything that Shaklee makes is perfectly safe & thoroughly tested. He gave his blessings to Physique.
That year her son went on to gain 40# during his high school diving competitions & was really built! He looked like a perfect 3-sided triangle with those very, very broad shoulders & a little tiny butt (it was so small that he wore a size 22" diving suit to state that year).
This article makes me wonder once again, Why other companies are just there to take our money for their products. Why are they not truly concerned about the health of others?
Thank you Shaklee for being true to your standards. - June OstPharmacist
Fatigue & Carbohydrates
A Class Project on Whether Carbohydrate Intake Delays Fatigue Group14, Honors Biology 131, The University of Arizona, Fall 1998
Introduction
A Brief Look At The Purpose Of The Class Project And The Paper We Examined.
This web page was created by honors biology students participating in a project with the ultimate goal of producing an informative web page. The focus of this web page was to study a scientific article dealing with carbohydrates and their effects on physical exertion. The article that served as the primary study and information source for this web page is entitled "Muscle glycogen during prolonged strenuous exercise when fed carbohydrate." It was published by the American Physiological Society and was written by Edward F. Coyle, Andrew R. Coggan, Mari K. Hemmert, and John L. Ivy, who were based in the University of Texas, Austin, Texas.
The goal of this scientific study was to determine if the delayed onset of fatigue, as a result of consuming carbohydrates, was associated with stopping muscle glycogen depletion. Therefore, this web page is dedicated to presenting the important points of the study and to expand on those ideas in order to encompass a more general function of carbohydrates in our daily activities.
Applications of the Study:
Some ways that the results of the studies can be used to help YOUR athletic performance: The fact that carbohydrates lead to more energy and a prolonged onset of fatigue has intrigued many athletes, nutritionists, and active people. This interest in gaining more energy has led to an increased demand in carbohydrate products.
Testing Carboyhydrate Products - Carbohydrates and Electrolytes:
Many companies such as Shaklee are starting to produce and improve carbohydrate products. In order to prove that the Shaklee products do work as well as they claim to, Shaklee performs clinical studies. In one of these studies, a product called Shaklee Performance, a carbohydrate-electrolyte prototype, was tested. Cyclists rode bicycles at 70% VO max for two to three hours. At the rate of one liter per hour, the cyclists received Shaklee Performance or water. Shaklee Performance maintained higher blood glucose levels than water throughout the test period. Shaklee Performance also maintained a higher plasma osmolality than water.
Testing Products - Carbohydrates and Proteins:
Another clinical study was done with Shaklee's Physique. Physique, a carbohydrate-protein combination, was tested among highly trained cyclists. The cyclists rode for two hours with a changing workout that simulated race-like conditions. They did this for three test periods. The athletes drank one of three drinks immediately and two hours after each ride. Physique, a protein drink similar to those of body builders, and a carbohydrate drink were consumed as drinks. Results of the clinical study showed that Physique had a greater insulin response in the blood than the carbohydrate drink which had a greater insulin response than the protein drink. The greater insulin levels led to a greater increase in the rate of muscle glycogen production in the four-hour period following exercise.
Testing Carbohydrate Products - One More Study:
Another clinical study was also done with Carbo-Crunch Bars by Shaklee. Cyclists pedaling at an energetic pace for more than three hours received Carbo-Crunch Bars and water or water alone. The speed was then turned up to sprint pace. Those who had been drinking water and eating the Carbo-Crunch Bars were able to last 24 minutes while those participants who had received only water lasted for an average of 2 minutes.
Results:
These clinical studies of Shaklee products show that carbohydrates help to prolong the onset of fatigue to keep the athlete going. Carbohydrate products have become so popular that dogs can even receive Power Bones, a product offering dogs a burst of energy from glucose and endurance from carbohydrates. The regular intake of carbohydrates during exercise help to keep body-sugar levels steady and prolong the onset of fatigue.
Methods - How the scientists performed the study:
The basic outline of the experiment consisted of a control group and an experimental group; both groups contained endurance-trained cyclists who had fasted beforehand. The cyclists were required to maintain a constant 70% aerobic workload while they cycled. The control group was given a sweet drink that did not suffice as an energy source; the drink contained aspartame (NutraSweet) which has no nutritional value. The other drink contained nutritionally useful carbohydrate that had an equally sweet flavor. Cyclists were not told which drink they were receiving. This was done to avoid biases (such as cycling harder with the carbohydrate drink to "please" the scientists) from entering the experiment and thus corrupting the data.
Muscle biopsies to measure muscle glycogen were taken before excercise, after 2 and 3 hours of exercise, and at the time of fatigue (when the cyclists could no longer work at 70% of their aerobic capacity). Blood samples were also taken every twenty minutes and upon fatigue. These blood samples were used to quantitatively analyze the glucose levels in the blood at the various times.
Results - The data that the scientists got from their experiment:
The results of this study were that carbohydrate feedings during prolonged exercise delayed fatigue by one hour. As seen by the results of the carbohydrate feeding during the bicyclists' extensive exercise, glycogen utilization is not spared in the muscle.

Nurtrional approach to tennis elbow, etc.
My friend and yours Dr. Steve Chaney passed this along to me. He vouches for the regimen at the end of the article. I've also had experience with GLA and EPA taking care of an instance of bursitis in my elbow. So share this with all your tennis & golf playing friends.
BobFatty Acids, Antioxidants May Help "Tennis Elbow" April 27, 2000
FREDENSBORG, DENMARK (Reuters Health) - A combination of essential fatty acids and antioxidants appears to be an effective treatment for the inflammatory injuries commonly known as 'tennis elbow' and 'golf elbow'.
Soren Mavrogenis, a physiotherapist with Denmark's Olympic Committee, tells Reuters Health that he has effectively treated several hundred cases of recurrent inflammatory injuries. He and his colleagues recently conducted a study in order to document the anti-inflammatory properties of this new treatment, which was tested for the first time in 1996 on a group of rowers from Denmark's National Rowing Team. The study will be published in a scientific journal of sports medicine in the near future.
Typically the injuries are treated with rest, physiotherapy, and use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to treat pain & inflammation.
"The results of this research confirm our clinical observations and leave us with the clear impression that inflammatory injuries can be treated without the use of NSAIDs. I see this as a regular breakthrough in modern physiotherapy. For the first time we are able to offer our patients a safe and reliable treatment for stress injuries with chronic inflammatory response. In fact, it is our experience that with this new treatment, as opposed to conventional treatment, athletes are able to train actively while receiving treatment," Mavrogenis explains.
The nutritional supplement used by Mavrogenis and colleagues to treat the athletes contains omega-3 (fish oil), omega-6 (borage oil) and vitamins A, B6, C and E plus selenium and zinc. According to Mavrogenis, most patients respond positively to the treatment in a matter of 2-3 weeks, depending on the severity of the injury, but in more serious cases it may take several months.
"The bad cases require the use of intensive ultrasound & certain massage techniques in addition to the antioxidants and essential fatty acids, but in the milder cases the use of nutrients alone is adequate," Mavrogenis says.
Generalist Dr. Claus Hancke also supports the use of essential fatty acids and antioxidants in treating inflammatory injuries.
"Strenuous exercise is known to produce an overload of harmful free radicals that damage healthy cells by oxidizing the phospholipids in the cell membrane. Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals and limit their destructive impact, which is why athletes must make sure to get adequate amounts of antioxidants to protect themselves against stress injuries. In addition, essential fatty acids are important since they support the body's production of beneficial type 1 and type 3 prostaglandins, those which counteract pain and inflammation," Hancke tells Reuters Health.
"Personally, I see the nutritional approach to inflammation as a big advantage, & I am convinced that essential fatty acids & antioxidants taken in combination have the same, or maybe an even greater, anti-inflammatory potential than NSAIDs," he added.
In Norway, where inflammatory injuries in shoulders, elbows, knees and Achilles tendons account for 25% of all job-related absences, the new anti-inflammatory regimen is presently being tested by NIMI (Norsk Idrettsmedisinsk Institut), one of Scandinavia's leading treatment facilities for sports injuries and rehabilitation.
I can personally vouch for the success of this approach. I take 800 mg of Vita-E Plus, Vita-Lea, and 4 each of the GLA and EPA on a daily basis. When I get tennis elbow or bursitis in my shoulder, I increase my GLA and EPA to 10 each/day. The inflammation is gone in two to three days!
SteveTennis Elbow... solutions 9/00
This note below came from Dr. Steve Chaney in response to an experience of someone who had gotten relief from tennis elbow using Osteokinetics. I believe the time frame Shelli referred to was 3-4 weeks. We do have remarkable products that make a difference in people's lives!
Dear Shelli,
You are very perceptive. In non-technical terms there are two aspects to "tennis elbow". The inflammation and the actual damage to the joint … EPA and/or GLA are great for reducing inflammation, but they don't actually repair the damage - the glucosamine in the Osteokinetics does that. The time frame you mentioned is about right for the time that glucosamine requires to exert its effects.
SteveHelp for Tennis Elbow?
A couple years ago my husband had frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis. If the symptoms are similar to tennis elbow, just in a different joint, our experience may be helpful. In short, he had lost cartilage in his shoulder/arm joint. His arm was "frozen" so that he could not move his arm very far. He could not, for instance, brush his hair, touch under the left arm, or play guitar. His arm just wouldn't go that far. It was terribly inflamed and very sensitive to touch. He tried 4-6 weeks of anti-inflammatories from the doctor--none of them worked. At that point, he was willing to try the Shaklee. After one week of taking 20-30 Alfalfa a day, the inflammation was gone. Then, he went through two rounds of physical therapy. About the time that therapy was over, Osteokinetics came out. The therapist said he would not gain any more range of motion (he was at about 80%) but he would lose it if he did not keep up the exercises. At this point, we began him on Osteo. He did none of the exercises. Two to three months later, he tried the exercises again and found that he had gained 10-15% range of motion. This was all due to Osteo, since he had not kept up the exercises. Once he was willing to try the Shaklee, he began a program of Alfalfa (20-30 a day), GLA (6-8), EPA (6-8), Vita Lea, Protein, and then Osteo (3). After 4 months of Osteo, we began tapering off on the quantity. He began with 3, then took 2 for about a month, then 1 for about a month, then stopped. When he didn't see the need for it, he stopped altogether.
By the way, our son had a broken ankle. He had lost bone and cartilage at his ankle. This had happened several years before this experience with his dad. The doctors had told him that nothing would help his ankle. He would always have arthritis in it and he would always have a slight limp. When he saw how the Osteo had helped his dad, he was willing to try it. At about the one month point, he saw slight improvement. He wasn't as stiff when he first got up in the morning. Then, at two months, he saw even better improvement. Now he wouldn't be without it. He barely limps, unless he has been on his feet for a long period of time or has carried a lot of weight that day (church work day, etc.). He can actually run on his ankle without throbbing afterward, as was the case before. Hope this relates to your friend with tennis elbow.
Donna (dannawkr@earthlink.net)Osteokinetics & knees
Hi Friends:
I am so excited, I just had to share this with all of you. Many of you know that I have been riding in the Multiple Sclerosis 150 mile Bike-A-thon now for the past nine years. Yesterday ( Sun.27th) I completed the 9th ride of 157 miles. Prior to the arrival of Shaklee's Osteokinetics, I was going to continue to raise money for M.S., but I didn't think I'd be able to ride anymore because of tremendous pain in my knee's, so much so, I contemplated having them operated on. The pain following those rides was so intense that I could hardly walk for three days after. After about a week I would be able to ride my bike again, with a lesser degree of pain.
When Osteokinetics was introduced, I began taking them faithfully ( 3 per day as suggested.) Then when the bike tour came in the last week in September 1997, I was able to ride the entire distance of 157 miles without a hint of pain. This year, 1998, I again rode 157 miles and my knees DO NOT hurt even a little bit. I did not train with any degree of intensity and my quads and hamstrings paid the price on the second leg of the trip. I must say that three mixtures of Physique saved the day in that department as well a 70 ounce mixture of Performance per 78 miles, kept me from having cramps, since the temperature was in the high nineties with equal humidity and 10 to 23 MPH winds constantly in our face on the return trip.
My dependence on these products assures me that no matter what the circumstance, they will ALWAYS WORK ! ! To me as an individual, that is of utmost importance because, in March of 1999 I will be aged 72 and I want to continue to do this until I am at least 82 years old. With the help of God, determination and these remarkable products, I see no reason why I can't.
SincerelyRichard B.(Dick) Foster 3rd.
Handling Osgood-Schlatter's Disease with Shaklee Nutrition
Shelley
Had word passed to from Donna Titus through Dawn & Gary Mendelson that you have someone dealing with Osgood-Schlatter's Disease. Below, I provide some background information on Osgood-Schlatter's and some recommendations for both for its prevention and for recovery.
For a background perspective, the following information comes from the book, Sports Health, The Complete Book of Athletic Injuries by Dr. William Southmayd, MD and Marshall Hoffman published by the Putnam Publishing Group.
- CAUSES:
- Osgood-Schlatter's disease is not really a disease. It is a tendonitis of the kneecap (Patella) tendon. The inflammation is at the junction (insertion point) of the kneecap tendons and the tibia.
- In young athletes (all children and teenagers are young athletes), the tendon is attached to prebone (growth plate) which is weaker than the normal adult bone. With 800 to 1200 pound stresses on the tendon from running and jumping, the tendon can become irritated and a resultant tendonitis begins.
- Osgood-Schlatter's disease occurs only in growing people --- usually between the ages of ten and sixteen years and virtually never in someone older than twenty years of age. The tendonitis often shows up as a bump one abd a half inches below the kneecap, on the front of the top of the tibia.
-
DIAGNOSIS:
- Osgood-Schlatter's disease begins with low-grade pain located directly over the patella tendon attachment to the tibia (shin bone). It frequently starts at the beginning of a sports season or after periods of forced inactivity and then an opportunity for a dramatic increase in activity levels. Spring time with its associated enthusiasm and increased play opportunities is the season for greatest incidence exclusive of sports specific onset.
- With onset, there is pain when first rising in the morning which intensifies with use during the day. In most cases, the pain is not initially severe enough to preclude walking and playing sports. The most common symptom is pain when kneeling. It usually takes two to three weeks for maximum symptoms to build up. When it becomes severe, a person is unable to run at full speed and some limp. The discomfort/pain is made worse by squatting, climbing stairs, and walking up hills.
- Physical examination will show a tenderness and swelling directly over the tendon attachment. A bump (inflamation/calcification) at the tendon insertion can be felt. Further testing is done by having the person sit on a table or other surface so that there is a 90 degree bend at the knees and the lower leg dangles down . The examiner places his/her hand on the ankle of the patient and has the patient push outward to straighten the knee. This should will cause discomfort/pain. Coming off the table, have the patient do
IF OSGOOD-SCHLATER'S, WHAT SHOULD BE DONE:
- Ideally, reduce the level of activity causing the symptoms.
- Ice the area after activity/practice. Use an ice cup or tie on an ice bag.
- Use a CHO-PAT or similar knee strap (You can obtain CHO-PAT knee straps from M-F Athletic Company, 800-556-7464, for $13.95 plus shipping. Straps are sized based on knee circumference.)
- Increase protein intake. Concentrate on Shaklee's Energizing/Instant Protein (6 scoops minimum). Other primary sources --- tuna, egg whites, chicken breast.
- Physique: Take immediately after practice/activity and then again 2 hours later and before bed.
- Vita Lea: My own feeling is that everyone should be taking at least 4 daily. With injury, I suggest doubling that amount.
- Optiflora: 1-2 servings daily. Will increase absorption of all nutrients.
- Alalfa: As much as the person will take. 100+ tabs daily is not out of the question although there are likely few children who would take that amount. There are those who are highly motivated and are truly competitors who will.
- Vita C500: 6+ daily. Move to the bowel threshold. Once there, back down by 1-2 and then start upward again at a slower rate.
- Calcium-Magnesium: 6-16 daily. 1-3 at breakfast and lunch, 4-5 at dinner and before bed.
- Zinc: 1-3 daily.
- B Complex: 2-8 daily.
- If everything else is going in, adding EPA, GLA, and Lecithin would be a plus.
PREVENTION OF OSGOOD-SCHLATER'S:
- Good solid nutrition. Everyone needs more than the USDV/RDA level of nutrients. Athletes and active children need more nutrients than couch potatoes. This means that a child needs good food on his/her plate 3-5 times a day plus appropriate levels of supplements. Do not expect to obtain nutrients from the foodstuffs on the plate. Listen to Dr. Bruce Miller's audio tape, Why Supplementation.
- Physical Training. Children can start weight training at 8 years old. This should be focused on basic, core movements. To prevent Osgood-Schlater's, concentrate on squats, leg curls, deadlifts, and lower leg exercises. For lower leg exercises, obtain a copy of Maximum Calves from Health for Life (800)874-5339 [in California: 800-523-9983]. At a minimum, do Standing Toe Pull-Backs and Calf Bounces. Following that, integrate Single-Leg Calf Raises.
- Get better insoles for your sports shoes. I use SOF & Sorbothane insoles. These can be obtained from Road Runner Sports. (www.roadrunnersports.com) phone orders 800-551-5558 customer service 800-662-8896.
- Coaches, start your practices with your normal warm up but be sure that you include the standing toe pull-backs and calf bounces both at the beginning and end of practice. Stretch gently as part of warm up and include a quad specific stretch. Part way through practice, include PNF stretching for both the quad and hamstring muscles. It will take a bit of time to train this but it will pay long term dividends. Include individual and PNF stretching at the end of practice. End of practice stretching is the most important.

How Shaklee Sport Nutrition products have changed my life!
About 3 years ago I had bladder surgery, which resulted with complications, hernias, and 6 months later, repair surgery by Dr.Gottschalk. He encouraged walking as much as possible to strengthen my stomach muscles, with the aid of an abdomen brace.
I was determined to get back to the fitness my body had one year earlier, and I was going to use the Physique this time in addition to the previous Protein, etc. After 4 weeks the brace came off, and I slowly, painfully, using walls, rails, I made my way out to the car and to the YMCA track once around. Arriving home I took a Physique drink. The next morning; (knowing I could walk around the track, hanging on to the rail), I went to the Y. Much to my amazement I was able to slowly shuffle my feet around the track not only once but four times. Friends watched in unbelief as I accomplished this task. I went home and took another Physique drink. The next morning at 6 a.m. because of Physique, I went eight times around the track. I was on the road to recovery. Four weeks later, Dr. G. encouraged starting to jog with my brace one block first day, then added one block per day from then on. Friends from the Y, encouraged me to run with them. Before long I was running W.Salem hills: a task I thought I could never do even before my last two surgery. I ran in March '98 the Shamrock Run along with fellow Y runners. Due to hip injury, I race walked the Steen Mt Run a few months later and took a third place. With Y runners encouragement I ran my first marathon in October ' 98; The Portland Marathon.
Due to a water puddle left on the floor of the YMCA, I obtained a Sciatic Nerve injury. My right leg went numb all the way. I started taking more Osteokinetics, and Optiflora was added to my Food Supplements list, recommended by a Shaklee Supervisor. It took me six weeks before I found Dr. David Gasser. In the meantime I went from stretching, crawling, stretching, walking backwards, posture improvement, (I found out by trial and error, walking backwards was less painful) and hopelessly tried acupuncture, physical therapy, massage, etc. Dr. Gasser was able to help me to the point where I am 90% healed from the injury. He also started me running on soft surfaced versus hard pavement.
Dr Gasser gave me the O.K. to train for the 50 miler and 100 miler. He advised me to lose 10 pounds; which is like 40 pounds less when you run. I went on I Love Dieting program two weeks before my 50 miler. Needless to say to those who are familiar with this program I drank Shaklee 's Slim Plan and Protein during this race with energy left to run more! Thanks to the " I Love Dieting" program I weigh 16 lbs. less and my running speed has become faster.
With my Shaklee business, I enjoy helping other people feel and look better too. I ask God to help me find those special people who I can help and make a difference in their lives.

Shaklee supplements used: All Shaklee Sports Products, ' I Love Dieting ' recommended food supplements, Instant Protein, Slim Plan, Optiflora, Osteokinetics.
I have a Personal Trainer and Triathlete in Chicago using the products. He loves the Performance. He also likes the Physique. (Do not put the water in the Physique until you get to the end of your race).
I have a 60 year old retired, RN, female, who just completed a 26 mile marathon. She used Shaklee and wrote to me how pleased she was with the products. She had stamina and held up better than many of the younger adults.
I also have several Air Force guys on the products and they are doing great. One does a variety of sports and refereeing. He pulled his leg one night when refereeing, took 20 alfalfa, Physique, and the next day was just fine and did aerobics. He thought he was going to have to go to the doctor.

Great testimony from a new member. Phil emailed me through my Shaklee yellow page. He was interested in sports nutrition. He had run the New York marathon before, but in his words, was "bonking out at twelve miles" over the past year. He really wanted to run the marathon again this year. He mentioned this to his massage therapist, who told him to try Shaklee.
I called Phil and recommended he start with the basic supplements along with Performance and Physique. I sent him the Product Guide as well as the Sports Nutrition tape (which by the way is fabulous). Phil placed his order and a week later he called me bright and early on a Monday morning.
He said he had been drinking Performance all day Saturday and Sunday. He went out for a run on Sunday night and ran 21 miles. Some improvement, 9 miles! He had a Physique shake as soon as he got home, and was virtually free of aches and pains on Monday morning.
Phil ran the New York marathon last Sunday in 4 hours, 30 minutes and called me Monday to report that he could walk up and down the stairs at work. He said after every other marathon he had run in the past, the stairs were not something he was capable of climbing the next day.
Once again, a testimony which supports what we all know, that Shaklee is everything we know and say it is!
- PamI just wanted to tell my Shaklee success story and hopefully others can be encouraged to reach for a goal.
I'm a 37 year old mother of three elementary school-aged children. I have been a runner for close to 18 years. During that time I have competed recreationally in various road races from 5K's (3.2 miles) up to marathons (26.2 miles). I usually ended up around the middle of the pack --no headlines for me! I ran a marathon in Colorado in the fall of 1997 and ended up becoming very ill a few months later. I discovered that during my training I wasn't feeding my body properly with the nutrients needed to sustain the demanding training program and actual race. By the time I had completed the race, I was a physical mess. I resolved in my mind that I wasn't cut out to run a marathon. So, I continued to run lesser distance races, and continued to end up in the middle of the pack!
In May of 2000, we moved to Florida where I was fortunate enough to have Nancy & Richard Brown as neighbors. Their Shaklee business came up in conversation one day and I excitedly responded that I had been using the Shaklee cleaning supplies for years. Nancy asked if I had ever used any of the nutritional supplements. I had not and proceeded in telling Nancy about my marathon experience and my desire to run the Disney Marathon in January, 2001.
She immediately gave me informtion and hooked me up with another Shaklee distributor that was an expert in training and nutrition. I followed his recommendations and started on a vitamin regime that consisted of Vita-Lea, vitamins E,C and B complex, and GLA. I also drank 2 Energizing Soy Protein Drinks daily. Before and after workouts I drank Performance sports drink. After long runs or weight training, I would have a Physique drink. It wasn't long before my running performance was dramatically enhanced. I felt strong during and after runs (I was actually leading the pack on organized training runs). My race results were also improving because I was starting to inch up on the leaders in my age group. But I knew the real test was yet to come --The Disney Marathon. My original goal was just to finish the marathon in under 4 hours and feel well afterward.
After I saw the results of my Shaklee program, I revised my goal to trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon. This would mean I would have to run the marathon in 3 hours and 45 minutes. I had never run that pace in a long distance race before. I was a bit nervous to say the least.
Marathon day came, I did what I had done throughout my training and followed my Shaklee plan. I am happy to say that I successfully completed the marathon in 3 hours and 43 minutes--2 minutes to spare!! I qualified for the 2002 Boston Marathon! My husband was waiting at the finish line and the first thing he said after he congratulated me was "You need to drink your Physique so you can recover". I can honestly say, that the Shaklee nutrients, supplements and sports products enhanced my running ability and enabled me to reach a goal and a dream. Now - On To Boston!

Hip surgery
Osteokinetics works great! No more knee pain... 4/99Just want to let you know the Osteokinetics is working better than anything I have ever taken before. I am so accustomed to the chronic knee pain that I forgot how great my knee feels when it isn't hurting. I rode 23 miles on Tuesday with 30 pounds of Anna on the back of my bike. My knee hurt a little after 18 miles. So I iced it and took three extra Osteokinetics before I went to bed. On Wednesday, I was pain free! Amazing.
Many, many thanks,Becky Sittason

I have osteoarthritis and take the osteokinetics and alfalfa. I recently added EPA and that really helped. It works best with B-complex, Calcium Magnesium and Vita E (per Carol Dalton's tape on arthritis). Funny, I ordered the EPA for my skin and it got rid of the rest of my "stickiness" in my knee in the morning and after a long drive, etc. My pain is gone!

Answer:
Has she tried Physique? Often when it is a tissue or muscle problem, it really works wonderfully well.
Donna ResnickArthritis Program Extends Life
Hi Vickie,
Thanks for your inquiry and for your continued support. My mother had arthritis when we got into Shaklee and she was so unhealthy that we were looking for something to help her. We found Shaklee, her health improved and we were excited.
We ALWAYS start people with an ounce of soy protein, Vita Lea (minimum of 2 per day), Vita-C ( 2-5 grams a day), and as much Alfalfa as it takes to reduce inflamation in the affected areas ( I take about 10-15 a day for my arthritis). This may all sound extreme but I sincerely believe that we had my mother around for an additional 20 years because of Shaklee. Most people didn't give her 5 years to live in 1970 and she died in 1993. It was well worth it!! GLA and Osteokinetics came around in the last 3 years so she didn't get the benefit of them. I eat 5 Osteokinetics a day and 3 GLA and my joints aren't as painful.
RandyRotator cuff injury - 12/98
My father-in-law had a torn rotator cuff and arthritis in his shoulder. I gave him a bottle of Osteokinetics to try. He is the kind of person who "doesn't need vitamins". After about 2 months, he noticed the pain was less. He was having cortisone shots and taking some kind of medication. After being on the osteokinetics, he was able to stop all other treatments. He was even able to go golfing this summer with no pain afterward. He has told anyone he meets that has some type of joint pain about Osteokinetics. Hope this helps.

Shoulder Testimony
My husband Ken had rotator cuff surgery year ago this month. He had a complete tear all the way through. I would like to share his recovery. First he was back to work within 6 weeks, which is very early for that type of surgery, before the surgery he took double alfalfa, double osteokinetics and double calcium. Right after the surgery he started taking 3 tablespoons of Physique twice a day plus the other supplements. He did fine and returned to work early and continued taking all his Shaklee supplements.
This past week he went in for his year check up. The Dr. who is very well known for his shoulder surgery and has a excellent reputation was taken aback. He couldn't believe that Ken had such a complete recovery. He again asked his age (which is 55) and said that he had never seen that much muscle development return in an injury of his kind or the range of motion return to that extent. Ken is a very faithful supplement taker and swears that he never could have made it through without Shaklee. He continues to take all the supplements especially the alfalfa 20-30 tablets a day and 2 osteokinetics twice daily, he also feels the Vita E helped his healing process.
Jane DePagterThe Shaklee glucosamine supplement, Ostekinetics, is a multi-blend of herbal ingredients unlike any product I have seen so far. I have checked out many different brands at stores and no product I've looked at compares to Shaklee Osteokinetics. It's a one-of-a-kind!
Osteokinetics "begins" with Glucosamine. Next is the herb Devil's Claw, then Alfalfa. All three of these ingredients are known to help people who suffer with arthritis, specifically, Osteoarthritis. Next there are minerals that are known to be helpful that are in Osteokinetics, and they include Boron, Zinc, Copper, and Manganese. So, with Shaklee Osteokinetics, you have a proprietary blend of 7 ingredients all designed to work together to help to build and maintain cartilage in the joints, and also will help to reduce inflamation in the joints. The result most people experience after using Osteokinetics (3 capsules per day) for a month is a reduction of pain and stiffness in the joints, and greater freedom of movement.
We have many satisfied customers (including myself, bum knee no longer bum!) that have told us how thankful they are for Shaklee Osteokinetics and how much better (and younger!) they feel because Osteokinetics works and does what it is supposed to do, reduce the inflamation and pain in the joints, and provide greater freedom of movement in the joints. KNEE REPLACEMENT surgery - 4/99
Carol Dalton put out an excellent tape on Preparing for and Recovering from Surgery. If he's on all the supplements he should be fine. I have found that Zinc is great with bone pain, and with healing from surgery.
LaurineKNEE REPLACEMENT surgery - 4/99
My wife, Myra, just had total left hip replacement and is doing great!!! You have to see it to believe it. She has been taking loads of Shaklee for years. After listening to the Carol Dalton, she even stepped up the supplementation. Took them to hospital with. Sipped on Performance during her stay. . Has not had even one pain in the surgery area.
Osteoarthritis - 4/99
Zann, I have been on Osteo for a year now and I have Osteo in my toes real bad. It has helped me. I have quit taking my medication for a year now and I feel great. I am now trying to get my Doctor to try it on others. Also, my Aunt has been on it since Jan. of this year and she could hardly get off the couch and walk. She is now doing great with Osteo. She works at Wal-Mart here in Troy, Ohio and she is getting her co-workers started on Osteo.

I'm now 44 and have had very painful spinal osteoarthritis since my early 30's. I refused meds for years until someone told me they hurt just watching me move! The dr. put me on high dose aspirin. This lead to really wierd and fluctuating deafness, but because of major stress and other health problems, I never associated it with the aspirin until 1 1/2 years later, but my hearing returned 24 hrs after stopping the aspirin (spring 1993). Then I began rounds of various NSAIDs: ibuprofen, ketophren (spelling?), voltarin, and many others. Some were completely ineffective, others worked for a few months, but none completely relieved the pain. The other health problems (chronic fatigue syndrome) led me to Shaklee, and I tried high doses of alfalfa and EPA but didn't notice any improvement in the arthitic pain although I definitely improved in overall health.
I finally decided to just forget the meds because they weren't helping that much anyhow. My doctor then told me that he would no longer need to monitor my liver enzymes! I hadn't realized that the meds put my liver at risk! The following year Shaklee came out with Osteokinetics. Exactly 3 weeks after I started taking osteokinetics, I was able to get out of bed without taking at least 5 minutes due to severe pain. I have some bad spinal problems that means I will probably never be painfree, but Osteokinetics has helped so much! (I take a bunch of other supplements as well, but I was already taking them and know that the difference in my arthritis came from the Osteokinetics.)
I also have osteoarthritis in my wrists and hips. Rainy days used to make me ache all over, but now I don't even think about arthritis on rainy days.
My mother really likes Osteokinetics, too, and feels like it works better for her when she also takes 10 alfalfa/day with it.
Hope this helps! fyi - to encourage people to take Osteokinetics long enough (4 - 6 weeks) to get results, I offer a very low introductory price on two bottles for first time customers. ISTM that I once read a message from Dr. Bruce Miller that said if someone doesn't get results with the 3/day dose of Osteokinetics, they should take 6/day. (3/day works for me).
JoyceFoot, knee, achy bones quit hurting
My sister, who is very skeptical, said only one Osteokinetics a day has helped her foot to quit hurting. She was convinced enough that she encouraged a friend to try it for a knee problem. Personally, I feel it has been helpful to stop general achy bones that I was experiencing.
PegPain-free and without Advil
My quick testimonial for Osteokinetics is that my husband used to have to take two Advil a day for knee pain but within a week of starting Osteo he's been pain free!
39 year old walked in marathon after 8 years
My husband has bad knees. He has been on osteokinetics for 1 yr. For the first time in 8 yrs he walked in the MS walkathon with me. He attributes it to the osteokinetics only. He changed nothing else in his life, no diet, no exercise. - only osteokinetics. He is 39 yrs old.
Carol BryniarskiVitamin C plus OSTEOKINETICS builds cartilage
I'd heard on a tape by chiropractor Dr Mark DeBrincat that you ought to take in lots of Vitamin C when you're taking glucosamine because it additionally helps the body produce a lot of collagen to aid in cartilage rebuilding.

Linda K.No pain in a month
Hi my name is Peter and I'm a Shaklee Sales Leader. For three years I've been trying to get my father on Shaklee nutrition with no luck. Finally I saw blood pressure medication on his kitchen table and I completely lost it and yelled at him about taking care of himself and not trusting his own son. Not the best way to promote Shaklee I know! Well two months ago he started taking Vita-Lea,B-Complex,and EPA. His blood pressure went back to normal in just two weeks taking two a day! When he saw this he opened up to me and let me talk to him about his back and shoulder problems as they were in bad shape and giving him a lot of pain, (from all those years of sports up to 61 years ). He started taking one Osteokinetics a day and two Cal-Mags and within a month he had no pain at all! He goes around to everyone telling them how great his son's Vitamin stuff is! Hope this helps you as it has my Father. P.S. He's still Very active playing on my League volleyball team and Marathon canoe racing at 61 years of age!
